What is an Importer-Exporter Code (IEC)?
The Importer-Exporter Code (IEC) is a 10-digit alphanumeric business identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It serves as the primary statutory prerequisite for any commercial entity seeking to import or export commercial goods or eligible cross-border services to and from India.
Following the harmonization of tax identification systems, an entity's IEC is identical to its Permanent Account Number (PAN). However, the code must be formally registered and activated on the DGFT system before customs clearance, foreign currency banking transactions, and export incentive claims can proceed.
Mandatory Annual IEC Re-Validation (April – June)
Under DGFT Trade Notice No. 58/2020-21 and subsequent amendments in the Foreign Trade Policy, every IEC holder is legally mandated to update and verify their electronic IEC profile annually between April and June, even if there are no changes in commercial particulars.
Failure to complete this mandatory yearly re-validation results in the automated deactivation of the IEC code, halting all active customs clearances, port shipments, and bank remittances until re-validation is completed.
IEC Modifications & Amendments
Whenever an enterprise undergoes structural changes, the IEC must be formally updated on the DGFT portal within statutory timeframes. Common modifications include:
- Addition or removal of manufacturing plants, warehouses, or branch offices.
- Appointment or resignation of Directors, Partners, or Karta.
- Changes in primary operating bank accounts or IFSC codes.
- Change in registered business address or communication particulars.
