What is the Government e-Marketplace (GeM)?
The Government e-Marketplace (GeM) is an online, end-to-end procurement portal hosted by the Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D), Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Under Rule 149 of the General Financial Rules (GFR), it is mandatory for all central and state government ministries, departments, public sector enterprises (PSUs), autonomous institutions, and defense establishments to procure goods and services through GeM.
For Indian businesses—including Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), authorized distributors, resellers, and service providers—GeM represents direct access to the largest institutional buyer market in India.

Why Compliance Precision Matters on GeM
Operating on GeM involves strict automated scrutiny. Common pitfalls encountered by unassisted sellers include:
- Catalog Rejection: Listing products under incorrect categories or missing mandatory technical test parameters causes automated listing rejection.
- OEM Brand Disapproval: Selling trademarked products without verified authorization or QCI vendor assessment prevents brand approval.
- Bid Disqualification: Submitting non-compliant technical documentation, incorrect EMD exemptions, or missing local content (Make in India) declarations leads to disqualification during tender evaluation.
